Stiff competition Saturday led the Manhattan girls’ tennis team to its first non-gold finish this season, losing the top spot to Blue Valley, which finished four points ahead of the second-place Indians.
Junior No. 1 singles player Jillian Harkin was the lone MHS player (or team) to go undefeated, sweeping through Emporia, Blue Valley and Derby by 8-0 scores before beating Andover 8-5.
No. 2 singles Maura Wiens finished sixth overall, beating Emporia and St. James 8-1 before falling in close matches to two different Blue Valley players (one loss was via tiebreak) to end her day 2-2.
The No. 1 doubles team of Ava Bahr and Hannah Loub also went 2-2, notching wins over Conway Springs (8-4) and St. James (8-1) before falling to Blue Valley (2-8) and another Conway Springs team (5-8).
Lastly, the No. 2 doubles team of Sophia Evangelidis and Erin Kraft finished in ninth place, falling to Conway Springs, 1-8, before beating St. James (8-6), Derby (8-4) and Derby (8-2).
Up next, the Indians host a quad with Junction City, Washburn Rural and Marysville beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
