The Manhattan Optimist Prime 12U softball team played in the Salina Slugfest, but as several other tournaments recently were shortened due to rain, so too was this one. The Prime faced the Marysville Magic in the first game and won 11-0. Maggie Brummett pitched and Janie Hilgers caught. The Prime scored three runs in the first inning, starting with Hilgers and Kat Ball walking. Hayley Fobes had a fielder’s choice RBI and Brummett singled to score Ball. Brummett was plated from a passed ball.

Ball and Emily Wuggazer filled in as pitcher and catcher in the second inning, respectively. Alexa Babcock and Charleigh Nelson had walks followed by Hilger singling to load the bases. Fobes then hit into a fielder’s choice. Brummett and Wuggazer also scored a couple runs on hits. Gracie Scofield also had an RBI on a single.

The Prime walked four consecutive times to start the fourth inning. After scoring a run on the fourth walk, Brummett doubled to add two more.

The Prime’s final run of the game came when Fobes stole home.

The Prime are now 11-10 this season.

They return to action at the USA Softball state championship from July 12 to 14 in Salina.
