WICHITA — Steven Roudybush was still catching his breath and squinting into the sunlight at Cessna Stadium, out of breath from helping his Wamego 4x400 relay team finish third, when he came to a realization.

He may have just left a legacy.

The Wamego senior earned points in every event he competed in at this weekend’s state track meet, and the Red Raiders’ 4x400 quartet of Roudybush, Jack Watson, Bristol Swann and Marcquiece Cade broke the school record with a time of 3:25.94 on Sunday afternoon. It helped the Wamego boys finish sixth as a team with 36 points, while the girls side took 15th with 22 points.

“Getting (the school record) today, at the final meet of our high school career,” Roudybush said, “is really great. We’ll hopefully see our names in the high school when we come back sometime.”

Because of inclement weather, the Red Raiders’ relay team was forced to compete on Sunday, the first time the Kansas state track meet has ever pushed past a Saturday.

That factored into Roudybush’s approach.

“Missing Friday and prelims made me a little more nervous,” Roudybush said, “because one shot is your chance.”

On Saturday, Roudybush took third in both the 110-yard hurdles (14.79 seconds) and 300-yard hurdles (39.70) and eighth in the 4x100 relay with teammates Taybor Vetter, Jack Watson and Ty Cooper. The group clocked in at 43.81 seconds.

That brought Roudybush back to his freshman year, when he ran hurdles for the first time.

He’s been at state every year from his sophomore campaign on, and he’s improved every season since, he said.

“All of it is just great,” Roudybush said. “I love it all.”
