Shirley Gessell Umbaugh died May 4, 2019 at Heritage House Skilled Nursing in Keller, Texas. She was 95 years old.
She was born August 26, 1923 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Lyman and Etta Gessell. The family moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1935. She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1941 and from Kansas State University in 1945 with a degree in Home Economics and Teaching. Mrs. Umbaugh was a member of United Methodist Church of Manhattan. She was a former member of AAUW, Town and Country Garden Club, and Man-Kan Camping Chapter. She also served on the local election board for many years.
She married Gerald (Jerry) Umbaugh June 16, 1946 in Manhattan after meeting at the local USO. They moved to Manhattan from Indiana in 1952 following a venture in the funeral business. They owned and Jerry operated Central Tire Company in Manhattan for over 30 years. They enjoyed camping and travel. They made a number of international trips. They also enjoyed meeting with the locals at McDonald's for breakfast. Jerry died September 01, 2013 in Manhattan.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Steven Umbaugh and his wife Christine, Fort Worth, TX and Jack Umbaugh and his wife Dee, Hendersonville, NC, two grandsons and four great grandchildren.
A private ceremony will be held at Sunrise Cemetery at a later date prior to inurnment. No memorial service is planned. Burial arrangements will be made by Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. Condolences may be left at their website (www.ymlfuneralhome.com). A memorial will be established for the First United Methodist Church of Manhattan. Contributions may be left in care of YML Funeral Home.
