James Edward Roper, 64, died May 29, 2019, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Manhattan, Kansas, after a nearly two year bout with cancer. He was born in Manhattan to Victor and Alice (Roelfs) Roper September 4, 1954. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Nina Hagerman Moss. He is survived by his mother, a sister, Barbara Kravitcz, a brother, Dennis (Nikki Son), and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

On July 7, 1997, he married Sara Leverance. They later divorced.

He was educated in local schools, culminating in a degree from KSU. He taught English classes for nearly a decade. He enjoyed fishing, music, and vintage movies.

He had many friends, loved to laugh, enjoyed a number of pets, and followed his appreciation of being outdoors into a vocation of house painting, particularly older area homes. He was twice honored by the Manhattan/Riley County Preservation Alliance for his work on restoration projects.

A come-and-go remembrance party for James is planned for Saturday, June 22, in the Blue Hills Room at the Blue Hills Shopping Center in Manhattan from 5:00-7:00 PM. A private memorial service for the family is pending.
