The Riley County Police Department listed the death of a Topeka man at Manhattan Town Center was a suicide, according to a RCPD report obtained by The Mercury.
Police responded to a report of an unattended death shortly after 10:30 a.m. Jan. 22 at 101 Manhattan Town Center Plaza and discovered the body of 46-year-old Justin Downie.
According to the report, Downie’s wife, Melanie Downie, reported him missing that morning after he did not respond to her texts and didn’t show up to work.
Melanie said he left their Topeka home around 5:30 a.m., and she did not hear from him when she texted around 6:30 a.m. Justin’s workplace called Melanie about an hour later to state Justin had not come in. After listing Justin as a missing person, police later found Justin’s body in the Manhattan Town Center parking lot with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Justin’s obituary on the Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home site said he graduated from Manhattan High School in 1991. He is survived by his wife, son, stepchildren and other family.
