Incoming Riley County Health Department Director Julie Gibbs said she’s excited about the opportunity.

Gibbs, current director of health promotion at the Lafene Health Center at Kansas State University, told The Mercury on Monday that she is looking forward to jumping into her new position.

“Overall, there are a lot of great efforts going on at the health department,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs, who worked as a health educator at the health department nine years ago, hopes to build momentum and continue to protect the health and safety of Riley County residents.

However, she will miss working with students at Lafene Health Center.

“I’ll miss that direct contact I had with students,” she said.

County officials said Gibbs will start at a an annual salary of $101,473.66. That is $2,472.94 or 2.5% more than current director Jennifer Green’s starting salary in 2016.

Green had a starting salary of $99,000.72.

This is because the pay scale adjusts with cost of living over the years, said Cindy Volanti, county clerk.

Green’s current salary of $107,973.26, according to public records.

Gibbs’ first day as director is Oct. 28, overlapping with Green’s tenure, which will end next month.

Green announced her departure from the position in August as her family is moving to North Carolina.
