The Manhattan-Ogden School Board on Thursday approved hiring two people for the principal positions at Bergman and Theodore Roosevelt elementary schools.
Ashley Smith, assistant principal at Riley County Grade School, will serve as head principal at Theodore Roosevelt. Steve Koch, principal at Lincoln Elementary School in Lincoln, Kansas, will serve as principal at Bergman.
Koch has served in the position since 2012. Prior to that, he was a teacher in Salina and Abilene. Koch replaces outgoing principal Lori Martin. Martin announced in May that she was retiring.
“It is an honor to be part of such an incredible school and district,” Koch said. “I am truly looking forward to working with the staff and students at Bergman Elementary School, as well as the district’s administration team.”
Smith taught in USD 383 prior to going to Riley, working at Bluemont Elementary. Smith replaces outgoing principal Andrea Tiede, who is leaving to serve as executive director of special services within the district.
“I am excited for this opportunity to return to USD 383 and accept the principal position at Theodore Roosevelt,” Smith said. “Andrea Tiede and the TR staff have worked hard to create a student-centered, welcoming environment. I look forward to working with them so that we can continue building on TR’s successes. Theodore Roosevelt has a wonderful community of students, families, and staff, and I feel fortunate to be a part of the teddy bear team.”
Superintendent Marvin Wade told the board at the special meeting that both candidates are eager to start working in the district.
Smith and Koch fill the final open principal positions. Martin and Tiede were the fourth and fifth principals to announce they were leaving during the academic year, respectively.
Greg Hoyt retired as head principal at Manhattan High School at the beginning of the school year. Michael Dorst, 10th-grade assistant principal, was promoted to the position. Benjamin Jimenez, who interviewed for Hoyt’s job, replaced Dorst.
Brett Nelson is leaving Marlatt Elementary to serve as superintendent in Clay County. Assistant Principal Shiela Stephens was promoted to fill the position.
Mindy Sanders is leaving Lee Elementary to serve as a principal at McKinley Elementary School in Abilene. Assistant Principal Erica Bammes was named head principal.
