The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office identified the armed man taken into custody Friday night after a four-hour negotiation near Westmoreland.
Deputies arrested Brian Whaley, 33, of Kansas City, Missouri, on charges of disorderly conduct and interference with a law enforcement officer. He is confined at the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
Sheriff Greg Riat said deputies responded on Friday to a report of a man with a gun wanting to harm himself who wouldn’t leave his vehicle near a park north of Westmoreland. Riat said there were also reported shots fired in the area.
Officials closed U.S. Highway 99 north of the town up to Highway 16 until about 9 p.m. after Whaley surrendered without incident.
Riat said the man was checked out by medical staff and taken to the jail.
“At the end of the day, he was parked near the highway and because of the situation, it was very unstable,” Riat said. “We closed down the highway for the safety of the public. … And in the end, it turned out well because no one was injured.”
