Kansas State women’s basketball player Peyton Williams made her international debut Tuesday night in Lima, Peru. Williams and the United States’ women’s national team defeated Argentina 70-62 in the first game for both nations in the 2019 Pan American Games at Colisei Eduardo Dibos.
Williams grabbed two rebounds in her 6:37 on the floor. Her team opened strong, building an 11-point cushion at one point in the first quarter. Argentina cut the lead to seven going into the second quarter, with Texas A&M’s Chennedy Carter had eight points.
The second quarter was more of a struggle for the U.S. The team only scored 10 points, none of which came in the final 8:04. Argentine used this time to surge into an 11-0 run to take a 34-33 lead at the half.
Argentina continued the pressure by expanding the lead to 45-37 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. The U.S. responded, closing the quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 51-47 lead before the final quarter. Princeton’s Bella Alarie scored six points in the third, including a clutch steal and layup to close the quarter.
The U.S. controlled the fourth, stretching the lead to 10 with 1:15 to play. Carter led the U.S., scoring 14 points. Tyasha Harris scored 13 points and Mikayla Pivac had 11.
