Kansas State vs Oklahoma State

Kansas State forward Peyton Williams (11) puts up a shot against Oklahoma State sophomore guard Braxtin Miller (14) during a Big 12 conference game at Bramlage Coliseum last season.

Kansas State women’s basketball player Peyton Williams made her international debut Tuesday night in Lima, Peru. Williams and the United States’ women’s national team defeated Argentina 70-62 in the first game for both nations in the 2019 Pan American Games at Colisei Eduardo Dibos.

Williams grabbed two rebounds in her 6:37 on the floor. Her team opened strong, building an 11-point cushion at one point in the first quarter. Argentina cut the lead to seven going into the second quarter, with Texas A&M’s Chennedy Carter had eight points.

The second quarter was more of a struggle for the U.S. The team only scored 10 points, none of which came in the final 8:04. Argentine used this time to surge into an 11-0 run to take a 34-33 lead at the half.

Argentina continued the pressure by expanding the lead to 45-37 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. The U.S. responded, closing the quarter with a 14-2 run to take a 51-47 lead before the final quarter. Princeton’s Bella Alarie scored six points in the third, including a clutch steal and layup to close the quarter.

The U.S. controlled the fourth, stretching the lead to 10 with 1:15 to play. Carter led the U.S., scoring 14 points. Tyasha Harris scored 13 points and Mikayla Pivac had 11.

The U.S. continues play at the Pan American Games at 6 p.m. Wednesday against the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game will be live streamed on ESPN3.
