Media members have high expectations for Reggie Walker this fall.
Walker, a rising senior defensive end for Kansas State, earned a spot on the preseason All-Big 12 team voted on by reporters. The conference office released the preseason team Tuesday.
Walker was the only K-State player selected. Media members predicted Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger will win the Offensive Player of the Year award, Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray will capture Defensive Player of the Year honors and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts will be the Newcomer of the Year.
This marks the first time in his career Walker landed on the team. He was a second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2017, one year after winning the conference’s Defensive Freshman of the Year award.
Walker enters the 2019 campaign with 16 career sacks, needing two more to enter the school’s all-time top-10 list in that category. He’s also tallied 30 tackles for loss as a Wildcat. He’s tied for third in K-State history with eight forced fumbles, one shy of the school record. His total is tied for second most nationally among active players.
Four of his forced fumbles came last season, when he recorded 35 tackles (12.5 for loss) and 7.5 sacks. He ranked among the top 10 in the Big 12 in three categories in 2018: forced fumbles (first), sacks (sixth) and tackles for loss (tied for eighth).
Walker and the Wildcats open the season at 6 p.m. Aug. 31, hosting Nicholls in Chris Klieman’s first game as head coach.
Klieman and five players — quarterback Skylar Thompson, receiver Dalton Schoen, defensive linemen Wyatt Hubert and Trey Dishon and defensive back Denzel Goolsby — will travel to Arlington, Texas, for Big 12 Media Days, which begin at 9 a.m. Monday.
Klieman and K-State’s player representatives will meet with reporters Tuesday.
