Kansas State sophomore Gloria Mutiri was selected to the 2019 Preseason All-Big 12 Volleyball team, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Mutiri and 14 others made the list. Eight of them, including the 6-foot-2-inch hitter, were unanimous. The league’s head coaches vote on the Preseason All-Big 12 team, but they are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Mutiri, who is from Sand Springs, Okla., piled up the accolades in 2018. She was named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, AVCA All-Midwest Region first team and was named the AVCA Midwest Region’s freshman of the year. Mutiri was also All-Big 12 second team and All-Big 12 rookie team.
Mutiri was the second Wildcat to earn AVCA All-America honors as a freshman. She had a .263 hitting percentage and averaged 2.77 kills per set, enough for second on the team. Mutiri also logged 1.96 digs per set and had 67 blocks and 15 service aces.
Mutiri led Kansas State in kills in seven games and had double digits in the category 14 times. Winning Big 12 Rookie of the Week twice, Mutiri had a career best 16 kills twice and three double-doubles.
