College Baseball: Kansas State vs Wichita State

Kansas State head baseball coach Pete Hughes watches a popup fly through the air during the game against Wichita State at Tointon Family Stadium on Wednesday. Kansas State defeats Wichita State, 7-2.

Kansas State will christen the newly renovated Tointon Family Stadium on Feb. 28, 2020. It will be one of 28 home games for the Wildcats’ 2020 baseball schedule, which head coach Pete Hughes announced Tuesday.

“The most important goal when formulating a schedule is making sure it will provide a national-tournament-worthy résumé,” Hughes, entering his second year as K-State’s head coach, said in a release. “To do this, you have to have a schedule that will be near the top nationally in RPI and strength of schedule. Your team has to travel and prove itself to be a tough road team. We have a difficult road schedule this year, including a four-game series at Stanford. I believe that our 2020 schedule meets all the necessary criteria.”

K-State will hold its first games at the renovated home park in a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson, which is part of a three-game series. The Wildcats’ other non-conference foes they will face at Tointon include South Dakota State (March 10-11), Eastern Michigan (March 13-15), Nebraska (March 17), Stephen F. Austin (April 3-5), Creighton (April 14), Wichita State (April 21) and Jackson State (May 5-6).

“We are beyond excited about our home slate and the opportunity to show off the new Tointon Family Stadium to our loyal and expanding Wildcat fan base,” Hughes said. “Its completion will provide a first-class venue for a first-class community.”

K-State opens the season Feb. 14, traveling Edinburg, Texas, for a four-game set with Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Hughes’ club then heads north to Corpus Christi, Texas to take part in the Kleberg Bank College Classic, where it will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Missouri and Utah.

K-State’s marquee non-conference series comes against national power Stanford. The Wildcats will head to California to square off in a four-game set with the Cardinal from March 6 to 8. Stanford, which went to the Super Regionals a year ago, is one of 10 opponents on K-State’s schedule that went to the NCAA Tournament last season.

In total, the Wildcats’ 56-game slate features 26 contests against postseason teams, including three Super Regional qualifiers in Creighton, Oklahoma State and Stanford. Big 12 foe Texas Tech reached the 2019 College World Series.

Nine K-State opponents (24 games) ended last year in the nation’s top 50 in the RPI, including three in the top 10; 13 of the Wildcats’ 22 opponents posted top-100 RPI finishes a season ago, with six were ranked in at least one poll.

K-State’s conference home schedule features Baylor (March 20-22), Oklahoma State (April 9-11), Texas (April 24-26) and Kansas (May 14-16).

But before the spring arrives, K-State will take the diamond for its fall schedule, which starts at 2 p.m. Thursday against Johnson County Community College at 2 p.m. K-State then will host Oral Roberts at 4 p.m. Oct. 27. Both games are free to the public.

K-State’s annual three-game intrasquad Fall World Series will take place November 8-10, with times still to be announced. Following the final game of the Fall World Series, players and staff will participate in their annual “Shave for the Brave” event, where they will cut their hair in support of children’s cancer research.

With the renovations to Tointon continuing, fans are asked to enter the stadium through marked signs near Brandeberry Indoor Complex. Seating down the first base line will be open and available to those attending.
