No. 24 TCU (13-5, 4-3 Big 12) was ranked in the latest poll by the Associated Poll for the first time since November in 2010. The Horned Frogs have won four straight games, including a 76-66 win over Kansas last Saturday in Fort Worth. TCU likes to shoot the long ball, as the team is third in the conference in 3-point field goals made per game (7.4) and second in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (.373). Three players average in double figures, including 17.2 points per outing from junior forward Amy Okonkwo. Against KU, Okonkwo came off the bench to record 24 points and five rebounds.
The identity of Kansas State (11-8, 3-5 Big 12) continues to be its defense under head coach Jeff Mittie. K-State ranks third in the Big 12 in turnover margin, while forcing opponents into an average of 16.3 turnovers per game.
For the season, the Wildcats have scored 353 points off turnovers, which equates to 27.2 percent of the team’s scoring production.
The +157 margin in points off turnovers is K-State’s highest mark in the last 10 seasons. The Wildcats have scored 20 or more points off turnovers in nine different games.
Fast break feast
The Wildcats have emphasized getting out in transition this year. They want a chance to attack the rim before the opposing defense can set up.
As a result, K-State has scored 150 points in fast break, an average of 7.9 points per game this season. Through the first 19 contests, the team has a +59 margin (150-91) over its opponents in fast break points.
It is a vast improvement from last year’s mark.
Last season, K-State scored 184 fast break points, ultimately posting a -33 margin in transition.
Junior point guard Kayla Goth is the only player in the Big 12 responsible for at least 50 percent of her team’s made field goals. Goth has scored or assisted on 51.2 percent of K-State’s baskets.
Last time out, Goth notched her fourth 20-point performance with a team-high 22 at Baylor. She hands out 6.5 assists per outing, which leads the conference and ranks 14th in the nation.
