Allen (Al) Frieling

Allen (Al) Leroy Frieling, age 71, passed away Saturday March 9, 2019 in Smith Center, KS after an 11-year battle with kidney cancer.

He was born on November 12, 1948 in Gaylord, KS, the son of Elmer and Valeta (Engelke) Frieling. He graduated from Gaylord High School in 1965, Fort Hays State University in 1970 and Auctioneer School in Mason City, Iowa in 1979.

Allen was united in marriage to Katherine (Kathy) Lynn Langhofer of Russell, KS on October 3, 1970 at Bible Baptist Church in Russell, KS. From 1970 to 1972 Allen served as a SP-5 in the United States Army, stationed in Pennsylvania and then Heidelberg, Germany. The couple resided in Germany for one year, then made their home in Smith Center, KS. At the time of his death, Allen was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Smith Center.

Allen was preceded in death by his wife Kathy of Smith Center, KS, his parents Elmer and Valeta (Engelke) Frieling, Smith Center, and by nephew Douglas Langhofer, Russell, KS. He is survived by son Wayne (Mitzi) Frieling, of Manhattan, daughter Pamela Breuckmann, of Overland Park, four grandchildren: Colton and Kylie Frieling of Manhattan, Oliver and Davis Breuckmann of Overland Park, one sister Dorothy DuPree (Terry) of Oogalah, OK, and their sons Boh DuPree of Snoqualmie, WA and TJ DuPree Collinsville, OK.

He and his wife Kathy opened Frieling Realty and Auction, located in Smith Center, KS, in the early 1980’s. Allen was an auctioneer, real estate agent and appraiser, and Kathy served as a real estate agent and full-time business operator. Together they built a business that became their lifestyle. Al was known for his professional service, ability to get top dollar at his sales, and specialized in farm equipment and land sales. The couple slowly retired later in life in to spend more time in Manhattan and Overland Park with their children and grandchildren.

In addition to his career and his family, Allen loved his Harley Davidson motorcycles. He rode through many states over the years with friends, and especially enjoyed attending the Sturgis, SD Motorcycle Rally with son Wayne each August. He also truly loved his hometown of Smith Center, Kansas. He knew practically everyone in town and thoroughly enjoyed his time with lifelong friends that lived there.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the American Lutheran Church, 415 W. New York Street in Smith Center, with the Pastor Loran Paulus officiating. A military honors presentation will directly follow the service, outside at the American Lutheran Church. Visitation will take place from 5:00 until 7:00p.m. Wednesday March 20, 2019 at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary, 116 W. 1st Street in Smith Center, KS.

Memorial contributions in honor of Allen may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center; the Grand Island VA Medical Center (Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System); or the American Lutheran Church and can be sent in care of the mortuary.
