It’s a family-owned, locally managed private company. The Seaton Publishing Company owns the paper; that company is based here. It was started in 1915 when Fay Seaton bought the Mercury from its previous owner. Current Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Edward Seaton is the third generation of the family involved in the Mercury; one of his sons, Ned Seaton, is the general manager. The Mercury is affiliated with other family-owned daily newspapers in: Grand Junction, Colo.; Winfield and Arkansas City, Kan.; Hastings and Alliance, Neb.; Spearfish, S.D.; Sheridan, Wyo.; and with the Manhattan Broadcasting group of radio stations in Manhattan. The radio company is a separate company with independent management; the two companies compete against each other here in news coverage and advertising.
