Whether the event will be covered is a judgment call by the newsroom, depending on lots of things: Importance, interest, timeliness, location (local is better than far away), and what else is going on that we’re obliged to cover. If you really, really, really want to make sure that your event is in the paper beforehand, so as to promote it, then we would suggest also buying an ad in the paper, since you have total control over that. If your event is free and open to the public, then we will generally at minimum publish a “notice” on page 2 of the paper prior to the event. That is a news service and does not require payment.
