We give $1 million/year in tax dollars to the local CVB to make videos about hunting Sasquach??!!!!!???  Wow!  First, the video doesn’t advertise/market Manhattan.  It makes us look like a bunch of idiots.  Never seen such a waste of tax dollars.  We spend money making videos of 50 year old ladies jumping on hotel beds and videos of Sasquach hunting in Manhattan.  Sheesh!!!  Of course, it does provide free advertising for those few cronies selected by the CVB to market in the videos by name.  Doesn’t do a thing for the taxpaying businesses who are competitors.  When will the Commission step in and shut down this slap in the face to taxpayers???

I’m shocked, shocked to find that the same people responsible for using the song “Fitzpleasure” for a video—including the line about “in your sn*tch fits pleasure”—are still making stupid videos with money that could be used for something actually important and helpful.

The bang we are getting or not getting from the CVB contract is the issue.  Tax receipts are down, which is the only real measure of success for the CVB advertising contract.  The last quarterly report to the commission was less than impressive from the standpoint of data and results.  Can the 900K for that contract be better directed or maybe spent on something else?  I think yes.

Can the contract be terminated?

I’m thinking no one has the seeds to even suggest such a thing.

“Business” as usual… except now the dittoheads are the ones rolling over for the Chamber.  You can change the cast of players, but the results are always the same.

Randall:  Yes the contract can be terminated, the amount can be reduced or next year we could give it somebody else.  That was suggested this year.  We made an attempt to redirect the funds.  We only managed to get the amount reduced from 1 Million to 900K, not enough votes for radical change.  All of the folks working at the Chamber and the CVB are good well intentioned people.  They are working very hard at doing the right think and achieving the goal of bringing folks in to stay at the hotels and spend money in the stores.  It seems that they are being rewarded for effort, and I applaud the effort. The question is do we reward effort or results?

But, why do they get a draw on our taxes?  Why do they get to decide who doesn’t have to pay taxes when they bring someone in?  How is that not putting the tax-paying locals at a disadvantage? Who cuts this deal every year?  Who is running this ship?
