I see we’re hiring a new Assistant City Manager.  This ACM will replace one who recently left for employment elsewhere.  So, we will be back to a City Manager and two (??) ACMs.  Salaries for those three manager positions tops $300,000.  By the time you put in benefits that those positions are blessed with, we’re probably out somewhere in the neighborhood of $400,000 to $450,000 in direct costs.  How many support staff are needed for those 3 positions?  A half-million dollars for “management” positions at City Hall.  Perhaps it takes that much to operate our fair City.  Or, are we “top heavy”?  From Community Development staff, to Finance Department staff, to Zoning, Code Enforcement, Public Works, etc. could any of the current duties performed by Assistant City Managers be moved to department heads?  I guess when I hear City Commissioners wanting to cut social service budgets and argue over $1,000 here and $500 there…  Have the Commissioners performed an in-depth evaluation as to whether or not the vacancy at ACM really needs filled?

Actually, we will have a city manager, a deputy city manager, and an assistant city manager.  Jason Hilgers was promoted to deputy city manager when Lauren Palmer left.

Probably a pretty good pay raise, from “Assistant” to “Deputy”.  Dial will be proud!  Wonder which deputy our “Deputy City Manager” most resembles… Barney Fife or Chester?  Does he have a badge?

Wonder if this is a glimpse of the future for Manhattan?  “Deputy Parks & Rec Director”, “Deputy Director of Public Works”, “Deputy Finance Director”, “Deputy Toilet Brush Operator”.....

Larry:  You pose a good question.  The City Manager claims the assistant manager is vital and should not be eliminated.  We just added a Training Officer to the Fire Department, that position was more important than a pumper truck.  It takes three votes to slow down the admin growth.  The votes for SSAB growth are also the same votes that are for increased administration size.  After all one of the Commissioners has consistently stated that the experts are -  the managers, staff and advisory board members and they need to be supported by giving them what they desire.

Right now on the city’s website it shows we have a city attorney and a legal assistant, but there’s no assistant city attorney listed.  At one time there was talk about the need for two assistant city attorneys and now we have none? What’s up with that?

When cornered, the good ol boys will always point fingers at the OTHER good ol boys and say, “They made me do it!”
