Most everyone here complains that The Mercury screws up headlines and facts.  Of course, that is often true, HOWEVER…even the big boys screw up.  Here is a tidbit from the Associated Press…reprinted in The Mercury. The story was about some inadvertent bombs dropped on a national treasure. “The two AV-8B Harrier jets launched from aircraft carrier USS Bonhomme Richard each jettisoned an inert bomb….”
Let’s hold it right there.  The fact that the navy messed up is certainly not news to any of us who have worked with them. They recently left a plane in Brisbane Bay.  Did you read about that?  Probably not.
Anyway, The USS Bonhomme Richard is NOT an aircraft carrier. It is an amphibious assault ship ...LHD-6…to be precise. If it were a carrier it would have the moniker CVN. Basically, it is a marine toter.  It hauls marines around who are looking for trouble.  When there is no trouble…which is depressing for the marines, then, the marines just go to the gym and they eat…that is the sum total of their existence.
The point is that any half-informed fool knows that this ship is NOT an aircraft carrier.  It can only handle helicopters and Harriers (for the uninformed, a Harrier is a helicopter disguised as an airplane…it can only land and take off up and down).
