Riley County Health Department was a stand-alone agency for many years. It operated automonously, with no real oversight. City and County were presented budgets from the Health Department that pretty well were simply ‘rubber stamped’. As an austerity measure, the City Commission felt the agency needed to be operated either under City or County, so elected officials were responsible for budget decisions. The City abdicated its control and involvment in the Health Department, allowing it to become solely a department under the Riley County Commission.
About the time the agency was to be transitioned from a joint venture between the City and County to complete operation by Riley County, the long time Director resigned/retired. A search was conducted and a new Director named. Someone can give the chronological accuracy, but I don’t think the current Director has held the position over a year. Now she’s resigned.
What is the real reason the relatively new Director has left her position with Riley County Health? Was the resignation simply to accept another career opportunity? Or, was the resignation due to micro-management by the County Commission? Where is the investigative reporting by local media? In so many cases, a resignation of a high-level government personality is more than the too often used “time for a career change”.
