Zhang appears in court

A Chinese grain scientist accused of stealing rice seed samples from a development company appeared in federal court Monday.

Weiquiang Zhang of Manhattan, a seed breeder at the Ventria Bioscience research facility in Junction City, was charged with conspiracy to steal trade secrets for his alleged involvement in a plot to pass the samples to a Chinese delegation that visited in August.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Zhang did not offer the just a proposal for his release at Monday’s hearing.

The next hearing will be a scheduling conference, set for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 18 in Kansas City.
