To the Editor: Families and citizens in Manhattan and the area are invited to participate in several activities of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration that honors and celebrates the life and impact of King. Please consider attending one or more of the following events.
• The MLK Jr. Community Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Manhattan Fire Station, 2000 Denison Ave. It features the art and writing contest winners from local schools (Bluemont, Theodore Roosevelt, Manhattan Catholic School, Manhattan High School), music, fellowship, recognition of the annual Spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Award winner and speaker Zelia Wiley, interim provost for diversity at K-State.
• MLK Jr. Prayer Breakfast, 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at Four Points by Sheraton. It features Gretchen Cassel Eick, civil rights activist and author of “Dissent in Wichita: the Civil Rights Movement in the Midwest,1954-72.”Thelecture is free, but the breakfast buffet for those interested will cost about $11.
• MLK Jr. Day of Service: Everybody Can Serve, 9 to noon Monday, Jan. 16. Individuals and groups can preregister to volunteer to do service projects in the community. For more information, contact
• The Laying of the Wreaths Ceremony, 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at Ahearn Fieldhouse on the K-State campus. This concluding event offers a time to pause and reflect as a wreath is laid on the MLK bust.
