William “Bill” Finney, 86, of Topeka, died at Midland Hospice House.
William was born on March 23, 1927, to Chester L. and Mary (Malone) Finney in West Frankfort, Ill.
At the age of 16, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II as a Ship’s Cook 3rd Class. At the conclusion of the war, Bill returned home to Illinois and worked for a period of time for his future father-in-law, Leonard A. Schick. In 1946, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably in the Korean conflict; he retired from service in 1965 as a Staff-Sergeant E-6.
Bill was united in marriage to Leona Schick on Sept. 13, 1947 in Benton, Ill.; they celebrated 66 years of happy marriage together. She survives of the home.
After his retirement from the Army, Bill went to work for the United States Postal Service, where he worked for over 21 years as a custodian until his second retirement in 1987.
Bill was involved locally with the Boy Scouts of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1650 in Topeka. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with his family.
Bill is survived by his wife, Leona Finney of Topeka; sons, Timothy (Huong) Finney and Anthony (Charlene) Finney, both of Topeka, and Leonard (Janet) Finney of Manhattan; daughter, Rose (Jim) Peak of Topeka; four grandchildren, Matthew (Rebekah) Finney of Knoxville,Tenn., Joseph (Abby) Finney of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Kim McClain and Nicholas Finney, both of Topeka; one great-grandson, David (Taylor) McClain of Topeka; and one great-great-granddaughter, Hayden McClain.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his 12 siblings.
Burial with full military honors will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., on Thursday.
