By The Mercury

The 2nd Varsity 8 was named Big 12 Boat of the Week after a strong performance at the Longhorn Invitational this past weekend.

The lineup of coxswain Kara Omo and rowers Chelsea Goble, Lindsay Smith, Aly Bronder, Abby Weaver, Ariana Thompson, Hunter Anne Postier, Lacey Reifschneider and Kayla Brock earned K-State’s first-ever victory on record over a ranked opponent this past Saturday, defeating No. 19 Oklahoma by nearly five seconds.

For the weekend, the Wildcats’ top-performing boat finished 2-1. The crew’s second victory came against Tulsa, a dominating win that saw K-State’s time of 6:45.2 outpace Tulsa’s finish of 6:52.68 by more than seven seconds.

The weekly honor is the first awarded to a K-State boat since the 1st Varsity 8 earned the accolade on April 19, 2012.

K-State will look to keep the Kansas Cup in Manhattan for the fourth straight year this Saturday when the Wildcats face Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown in Kansas City.
