Junior-to-be Kyle Weldon highlights a host of Kansas State men’s golfers who are finding success in the amateur ranks this summer.
Weldon led the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifying event wire-to-wire to earn medalist honors. The Des Peres, Mo., product recorded 4-under 134 to finish atop the leaderboard and qualify for the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Laurel Hill Golf Club, July 15-20, in Lorton, Va. Weldon will participate in his second-consecutive USGA Championship having qualified for the 2012 U.S. Amateur.
Along with Weldon, sophomore-to-be Hank Simpson and incoming freshmen JP Derksen and Seth Smith competed in the 2013 Missouri Amateur at the Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City. All four players advanced to the match play portion of the event, with Simpson and Weldon winning two matches.
Day four of the competition was highlighted by Weldon, who sank is first-ever a hole-in-one in live competition.
