What’s one to make of dueling jobs numbers?

To the Editor:
I’m confused. On Friday, Oct. 5, the Mercury published a story on page B1 saying that the Labor Department reported the national unemployment rate had dropped to 7.8 per cent.  Yet on page B4, an article states that the unemployment rate was expected to go from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent last month. This was apparently based on a Labor Department jobs report.
