Weldon wins second straight amateur title

Kansas State junior Kyle Weldon recorded his second straight Metropolitan Amateur Championship title this past weekend at the Persimmon Woods Golf Club in suburban St. Louis, Mo.

With the win, Weldon became just the second golfer in Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association history to earn back-to-back victories.

With his father, Keith, serving as his caddy, Weldon began the event with a first-round 5-under 65, but battled high winds during Friday’s second round to record a 3-over 73 to enter the final round with a two-stroke lead. Using three final-round birdies, Weldon was able to hold off a late charge by Phil Caravia to finish atop the final leaderboard at even-par 208.

Weldon and the rest of the Wildcat men’s golf team will open the 2013-14 season Sept. 16-17 in the Columbia Regional Preview at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo.
