Wamego survives against Hesston

By The Mercury

In the semifinals of the Hillsboro midseason tournament, the Red Raiders won the battle of unbeatens with Hesston, 47-45, on Thursday to set up an all-Flint Hills championship game against undefeated Riley County on Saturday.

Wamego trailed by two after an old-fashioned three-point play by Hesston’s Caylee Richardson, but Kaylee Page hit a 3-pointer with less than 15 seconds to play to give the Red Raiders a 46-45 lead. After a failed inbound play, Hesston turned the ball over and Page hit a free-throw to deliver the final margin.

Wamego trailed 27-21 at halftime, but got enough down the stretch to stay unbeaten.

Page led with 24 points, including five 3s, while Lanie Page added eight points and Caitlyn Claussen chipped in six.

Wamego plays Riley County in Saturday’s championship at 5:45 p.m.
