By The Mercury

It was a nice start to the season for Wamego on Thursday, as both teams opened with home victories over Rossville.

The girls’ team posted a dominant 49-14 victory over the Bulldogs, while the boy’s team won 83-49.

The Wamego girls opened Nebraska commit Kaylee Page’s senior season by outscoring Rossville 11-0 in the first quarter.

The defending Class 4A state champions led 29-4 by halftime, and rolled through the rest of the game.

Wamego never allowed the Bulldogs to score more than six points in a quarter, holding them to four points in both the second and fourth periods.

The Red Raider boys built up a 27-6 lead after just one quarter, and rolled to a 52-18 halftime advantage.

Wamego let off the gas somewhat in the second half, as the teams each scored 31 points to finish off the game.

Trenton York was the big scorer for the Red Raiders, scoring 20 points with six 3-pointers. Kyler Alderson added 14 points.

Both teams will be in action again tonight, going on the road for games at Holton.
