In the championship game of the Twin Valley League tournament, Axtell edged Valley Heights 60-57 to take the tournament title.
Charles Musil scored 24 for the Mustangs, but his team came up short as they tried to rally from a seven-point halftime deficit.
Axtell jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the first quarter and managed to stay ahead the rest of the way, even when the Mustangs tried to rally in the end. Valley Heights outscored Axtell 25-20 in the final quarter, but couldn’t finish off the comeback, settling for second place in the tournament.
In other boys’ games, Wetmore beat Blue Valley 70-63 in a high-scoring affair, while Centralia edged Frankfort in the third-place game 45-43. Frankfort had its chances, taking a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and leading by two at halftime. But Centralia won the second half, and the game.
In girls’ action, Valley Heights beat up on Frankfort 46-24 in the third-place game. The Mustangs fell to Washington County 67-59 on Friday, while Frankfort lost to Baileyville B&B 56-47 to land in the third-place game. Individual scoring was not available.
Clifton-Clyde beat Blue Valley 38-34 in the 11th-place game of the TVL tournament.
