USD 383 BOE opposes reducing school funds

By Bill Felber

The USD 383 Board of Education formally went on record Wednesday opposing a portion of Congressional negotiations designed to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” by reducing federal aid to local school districts.

By a 6-1 vote, with board member Walt Pesaresi in opposition, the board adopted a resolution opposing the possible sequestration of federal education funds that is being discussed as part of the negotiations in Washington.

District officials say the proposal would cost the district about $531,000.

“There are ways to balance the budget without doing it to kids who really need Title I funds,” remarked board president Dave Colburn.
