According to CBS Sports, Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood is believed to be the top candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Southern Miss.
Sources told the website on Tuesday that the former Kansas State associate head coach and player had been offered the job and was expected to accept it.
Those same sources stressed that nothing had been signed yet, but an announcement could come as early as Wednesday.
Underwood just completed his first season as a head coach at the Division-I level after spending seven years as an assistant under Frank Martin at K-State and South Carolina.
The Lumberjacks went 32-3 under Underwood this season — including 18-0 in the Southland Conference — and advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA tournament after beating VCU.
Underwood, a McPherson native, won the Joe B. Hall Coach of the Year award, presented annually to the top first-year coach in college basketball.
