Two-story house saved from blaze

By The Mercury

The Manhattan Fire Department saved a two-story house from burning to the ground Friday night.

At 10:46 p.m., the department was called to 3144 Ella Lane.

Department officials said that upon arrival, crews found a two-story residential structure with light smoke coming from the rear of the structure.

Officials reported that the house had four occupants at the time of the fire. However, everyone already had gotten outside without injury prior to responders arriving.

The owner is listed as Eduardo Maldonado of Manhattan.

Crews took about 15 minutes to contain the fire that a spokesman said “first appeared to start in the rear exterior wall.”

The crew kept the fire from spreading to the rest of the house.

The department reported that six fire trucks and 16 firefighters responded. The last truck left at 12:52 a.m.

Loss is estimated at $5,000 to the house, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
