The K-State tennis team opened the ITA Central Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, with four freshmen competing in the Qualifying Draw.
The group of Iva Bago, Livia Cirnu, Riley Nizzi and Maria Panaite went a combined 3-4 in singles match play with each athlete, aside from Panaite, competing in two matches.
Coming into the Regionals with a 4-2 record early in her K-State career, Cirnu quickly took care of Wichita State’s Summer Schlotterback in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. She would not fare as well in her second round matchup, dropping straight sets to Tulsa’s Renata Kuricova (6-2, 6-1).
Bago broke a two-match losing streak with a tightly-contested victory over Madison Cook of Saint Louis in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (5). Like Cirnu though, Bago dropped her next match to Shockers senior Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
In other contests, both Panaite and Nizzi dropped their first matches of the qualifying round. Nizzi rebounded by picking up a win in the consolation round over Central Arkansas’ Cassidy Crawford (6-2, 6-3), while Panaite was set to meet freshman Samantha Budai of Iowa State on Friday.
Top-seeded Petra Niedermayerova was also in action on Friday, looking to defend her ITA Central Regional crown in singles play.
