What do you say about a track team that has too few members to even consider competing in relays but has enough firepower to win a state championship?
Congratulations, of course!
It happened Saturday at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium, where the three members of the Valley Heights High School girls team proved they were the class of Class 1A.
The three students who qualified for state were Brandi Jo Roepke, Sidney Blackburn and Shelby Vermetten.
They were more than enough. Miss Roepke, a sprinter, won the long jump, placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes and placed third in the 400. Miss Blackburn won the discus and placed fifth in the shot put. She and Miss Roepke, who a year ago constituted Valley Heights state track team, proceeded to second last year.
This year they were joined by Miss Vermetten, a freshman. Like Miss Blackburn, a thrower, she placed second in the shot put and the discus.
Valley Heights head coach Tony Trimble was understandably delighted for the trio. He put it well when he said, “It was a great day, and it all came together for them.”
Indeed it did. Given that Miss Blackburn competed as a junior, Miss Roepke as a sophomore and Miss Vermetten as a freshman, it might well come together for them again next year.
