Tallgrass expansion on agenda

By The Mercury

Tallgrass Brewing Company’s proposed expansion will be discussed during the city commission meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Tallgrass is planning a move to the former Western Wireless Call Center at 5960 Technology Circle in Corporate Technology Park, according to a proposal coming to the commission.

To complete that switch, the company needs commissioners to approve a rezoning from business park to a light industrial district.

Tallgrass is currently located at 8845 Quail Lane in the Green Valley Business Park.

The company’s goal is to get into a bigger facility and move all of its production to Manhattan. Approximately 30 percent of production currently is done in Cold Spring, Minn.

Commissioners also need to determine whether they intend to go forward with Tallgrass’ economic development application during their April 1 meeting.

The company is asking for $430,000 from the city due to its expanding operations.

According to its application, Tallgrass would invest more than $5 million in the Corporate Technology Park and create 40 new jobs over the next 10 years.

The proposed move to a facility covering nearly 60,000 square feet would be part of Tallgrass rapid expansion.

Tallgrass announced on March 16 that it planned to open a brew pub in downtown Manhattan called The Tallgrass Taphouse.

The brew pub will be located at the 300 block of Poyntz Ave., in the space formerly occupied by Jo-Ann Fabric Store.

Other topics at Tuesday’s commission meeting include first readings on two items: rezoning of a two-story office building owned by Ed Schram Dodge, to allow for the dealership’s expansion; and annexation and rezoning of the proposed Olympic Addition, which would add housing in the Grand Mere area.
