T-Birds beat Indians, 69-58

The Manhattan High boys’ basketball team couldn’t get over the hump against Shawnee Heights on the road Friday night, capping a long week with a 69-58 loss to the Thunderbirds.

In their first game following the resignation of coach Tim Brooks, Manhattan got off to another slow start, allowing an 11-0 run in the first quarter that set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Indians cut the lead to four in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Grant Munsen, but Shawnee Heights closed the quarter on a 6-1 run that made it 46-37 heading into the fourth.

The T-Birds led by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter before Manhattan’s rally attempt got into gear.

Manhattan had four players in double figures, with Pierson McAtee scoring 12 points, Alex Stitt and Gabe Awbrey each scoring 11 and Payton Stephens scoring 10.

Manhattan hosts Junction City on Tuesday in a rivalry matchup.
