Storm threat changes area sub-state

By The Mercury

While the blizzard may have missed the Manhattan area, it didn’t stop safety-minded school administrators from postponing sub-state games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

One of few games played Monday was the Riley County girls’ 60-26 win over Osage City, which was moved up to a 3 p.m. start and beat the storm.

The rest, including Jefferson West at Wamego boys and Royal Valley at Rock Creek boys, were postponed.

Despite the lack of snow in the area, the changes weren’t just isolated to Monday’s games. The Highland Park vs. Wamego girls’ game scheduled for tonight in Wamego was also postponed.

Wamego will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, with the boys’ game against Jefferson West at 6 p.m., and the girls’ hosting Highland Park immediately following at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be played at home.

Rock Creek will also play a doubleheader on Wednesday, but has moved its games to Topeka. It’ll play at the sub-state site, Hayden High School, with the girls’ team playing Santa Fe Trail at 4:30 p.m. and the boys following with Royal Valley at 6 p.m.

The Riley County boys’ trip to Marysville is still to be played as scheduled, tonight at 7.

Among smaller schools, travel was especially difficult, so administrators opted to move all games to later in the week. At the 1A Division-I Centralia sub-state, all first-round games on Monday and Tuesday were moved to Thursday. Linn’s girls play Blue Valley at 6:15 p.m. and Blue Valley’s boys play Valley Heights at 7:45.

All semifinals will be held Friday, with the championships still held Saturday.
