Stipend for ‘incidentals’ should complement athletic scholarships

By Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:
Regarding Jamar Samuels’ reported situation, I have argued for years that scholarship athletes should get a living stipend. It could be “salary” or based on need like academic stipends are. College athletes can’t work or take part-time jobs, like a non-athlete, so where are they supposed to get money for incidentals like the things most other college students spend money on — toiletries, eating out now and then, a movie etc?
