By The Mercury

Kansas State Assistant track and field coach Steve Fritz will be inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Before starring in track and field and basketball at K-State, Fritz was a standout athlete at HCC where he was one of the top junior college athletes in the country.

Fritz won a NJCAA national title with the basketball team and went on to win the decathlon at the NJCAA national championship.

During his time at K-State, Fritz earned All-America honors twice in track and field and came off the bench for the basketball team from 1988-91.

In track and field, he went on to set the Big Eight championship meet record in the decathlon. Fritz was a member of Team USA a total of 10 times after his collegiate career and finished fourth in the decathlon at the 1996 Olympics, missing the bronze medal by just 20 points.
