State of the State

By Walt Braun

We urge area residents to tune in at 6:30 this evening for Gov. Sam Brownback’s State of the State Address. It will be broadcast on KTWU, Channel 11 for Cox Cable customers.

The governor has an ambitious agenda for this session, the first session in a number of years in which the state will have a surplus rather than struggle to deal with budget shortfalls.

He is expected, among other things, to outline his budget and tax proposals — issues that are likely to affect all Kansans, regardless of age or political persuasion.

What happens in the 2012 session of the Kansas Legislature is important, whether it involves education, transportation, KPERS, addressing the needs of the poor and elderly or placing the state on more solid financial footing.

And whether one likes or dislikes Gov. Brownback, he is our governor and his vision of the future of this state ought to be worth an hour of its residents’ time.
