St. John wins wild six OT game at 2A

By The Mercury

The St. John and Bishop Seabury boys’ basketball teams needed six overtimes to decide which team would advance to the title game on Friday at the Class 2A tournament at Bramlage Coliseum.

In the final moments of the sixth overtime, St. John guard Cole Kinnamon threw up a near 40-foot heave toward the basket and swished it through to lock in the Tigers’ 52-51 win over Bishop Seabury. The game set a record for the most overtime periods in 2A tournament history, and video of the ending went viral and made appearances on major outlets like USA Today. The teams played to a tie at 39 in regulation, and then sat tied at 45 after five overtime periods. The teams went scoreless in two of the six overtimes. Kinnamon scored 13 points, but his final three points made up the most memorable play of a game and put the contest into the record books.
