Squirrel blamed for power outage

A power outage in central Manhattan left some residents without power briefly Tuesday evening.

The outage began at around 5:20 p.m. when a squirrel caused an equipment malfunction near 16th Street and Fairchild Avenue in Manhattan, a Westar Energy spokesperson said.

The outage affected around 1,300 customers initially. Power was restored to around 400 customers by 5:35 p.m. and to remaining customers by 7:30 p.m.
