Sproles, Thomas meet tonight

By Joshua Kinder

With the Green Bay Packers and Jordy Nelson off this week and quarterback Josh Freeman now riding the bench in Tampa Bay, it was a slow week for former Kansas State Wildcats in the NFL.

There is potential tonight, however, as two former K-State running backs square off on Monday Night Football when Daniel Thomas and the Miami Dolphins visit Darren Sproles and the New Orleans Saints.

Only one Wildcat found himself on the winning side Sunday, though, as linebacker Reggie Walker collected four tackles for San Diego in the Chargers’ 30-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Terence Newman, who had a fumble recovery for a touchdown last week, registered six stops for the Cincinnati Bengals in their 17-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Former linebacker Justin Tuggle had a pair of stops for the Houston Texans in a 23-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Bryce Brown had a quiet day running the ball for Philadelphia, collecting 19 yards on eight carries. The running back also caught two passes for 41 yards in the Eagles’ 52-20 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Tight end Jeron Mastrud caught one pass for Oakland in the Raiders’ 24-14 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Tonight’s matchup features the top two rushers in K-State history when Sproles and Thomas meet in primetime. Sproles had a school-record 4,979 yards for the Wildcats from 2001-04, while Thomas rushed for 2,850 yards from 2009-10. Sproles is having the better year so far this season with 18 carries for 65 yards and 16 receptions for 163 yards. Thomas has rushed 21 times for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching three passes for 31 yards.
