A Fort Riley soldier died Friday after crashing his vehicle on Interstate Highway 70 near Abilene while reportedly fleeing police.

Kansas Highway Patrol officials said Matthew Peachey, 21, died after his 2011 Mazda Hatchback left the roadway and struck a cement culvert in a ditch about 9 miles east of Kansas Highway 15 in Abilene.

Officials said Peachey had been driving east on I-70, attempting to elude highway patrol troopers when the crash occurred at about 8:20 p.m. Friday.

Officials did not know why Peachey lost control of his vehicle, which had an Oregon license plate or how fast Peachey was driving at the time he crashed.

Records indicate Peachey was not wearing his seatbelt.

Officials said they are not sure why Peachey was fleeing from police and are waiting on autopsy results.

The patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team is investigating the accident.
