Soldier is sentenced for murder

By The Mercury

A Fort Riley soldier has been convicted by a court martial of murder and sentenced to life in a military prison in conjunction with the death of a fellow soldier.

Radio station KMAN said John Hughes was court martialed and convicted on charges of murder, resisting arrest, false official statements, larceny, and wrongful appropriation.

The court reportedly found that Private Hughes fatally stabbed Private Thomas Lavrey in Lavrey’s barracks room on Fort Riley. Hughes reportedly stole the murder weapon, and also stole a military vehicle that was later recovered off-post.

Hughes will be confined in the Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth.
