A Fort Riley soldier has been charged with murder in connection with the recent death of a fellow soldier on post.

Post officials said Thursday that Pvt. John Hughes, a wheeled vehicle mechanic with Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, was charged with the murder of Pvt. Thomas Lavrey.

The 21-year old West Seneca, N.Y., native was pronounced dead at Irwin Army Community Hospital after being found unresponsive in his living quarters May 14.

Lavrey was a utilities equipment repairer assigned to the same unit as Hughes.

Hughes is also being charged with resisting arrest and larceny.

He is in custody at the U.S. Army Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth.

Officials said the incident is still under investigation.
