Shooting suspect requests continuance

WESTMORELAND — A Wamego man suspected of shooting at police outside of Manhattan’s Quality Inn and Suites in December requested an extended status hearing today.

Dustin Monroe, 33, will appear in Pottawatomie County court Feb. 25 in a continued status hearing from the one that was originally scheduled.

Monroe is charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling and one count of criminal damage to property.

The charges stem from a Dec. 10 incident in which Monroe was hospitalized after a shootout with police in Manhattan.

Pottawatomie County prosecutor Sherri Schuck said the reason for the continued hearing is that Monroe’s attorney would like additional time to review the state’s evidence.
