Senior 17ers lose in Zone final

By Joel Jellison

The Manhattan American Legion Manko Senior 17ers saw their season come to an end on Friday, losing to Emporia 9-6 at Soden’s Grove in Emporia.

Emporia led 8-0 after the top of the seventh inning when the 17ers made a run scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to trail 8-2.

Manhattan tacked on four more runs in the eighth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the big Emporia lead, as the host team held on for the win.

Manko got doubles out of Dillon Mack and Chad Fiser in the loss, which was taken by pitcher Craig Berry.

Ryan Huth led the way for Emporia with a double and a three-run home run that helped bolster the early offensive charge. Cody Fitzgibbons had two doubles and to singles. The 17ers were out-hit 14-9 in the loss.

Emporia advances to the AAA state tournament this week in Leavenworth, beginning on Wednesday.
